So you think you have created your best work of art? Well, why don’t you do a rain check? Try to observe your finished woodwork and your surroundings. Perhaps something is amiss. You might have completely forgotten about cleanliness.

Honestly, it is perfectly understandable. There will be times when you can be so overwhelmed by your own project or that you are excited to work on another woodworking plan that cleaning may not be one of your immediate priorities. But then, it should be, and to make this easier for you, check out some pieces of advice on woodwork cleaning.

One of the most common problems by any woodworker is fingerprints, which may damage its overall aesthetic value. But don’t be desperate. You can actually create your own cleaning solution. You combine and mix ½ cup of white vinegar, ¼ of baking soda, and 1 cup of ammonia in a bucket of tepid water. You start cleaning the mess by using a sponge, and work from the bottom up. To lift off the fingerprints, apply paste wax and polish with a soft cloth.

It isn’t unusual to encounter dirty and wet wood floors. You can attribute this dilemma to flood waters, but this is a big no-no. Aside from it destroying the floor, it exposes you to harmful organisms such as mildew and mold that thrive best in damp areas. In cleaning wood floors, drain all water from flooded areas, usually the exterior walls, sometimes in partitions. Before the whole house dries, scrub the panels with plenty of water, nonsudsing soap, and a stiff brush. The whole cleaning process, though, may take months, and sometimes, before you realize it, the woodwork can be far from being saved. In this case, you can consider doing some renovations or changing the whole flooring ultimately.

Generally, the most important aspect that should be considered in cleaning woodwork is the kind of finish you want to achievea type that doesn’t cause further injury. Wood type is only secondary. Other woodwork such as paneled walls may need a stronger treatment especially if there is already dirt or grease buildup. At this point, you can use some cleaning solvents and chemicals such as mineral spirits. However, you have to be sure that they don’t affect the wood finish. It is also recommended that you double-check these substances as there are some that are volatile and flammable. So learn to do some cleaning in open spaces or well-ventilated rooms.

With some help from your friends, it’s not unreasonable to put up a pre-fab garage or other building inside of a weekend. It’ll take some quality time with hammers and a nailgun, but the end result will raise the value of your property and give you grist for stories along the lines of “Yeah, remember when we put up Bill’s garage…”

The Amish are known for their strong family values, dedication to hard work, and for their ability to produce high-quality furniture. The men work in the fields or the workshop all day. The women perform the household work and look after the children. The kids study their lessons and learn reading, writing, and arithmetic. And at the end of every day, the families gather around their dining tables to spend quality time together, share their day’s experiences, and to discuss their plans for tomorrow. The majority of us, however, do not live like the Amish. Life is busy and hectic and families spend most of their time spread thinly amongst various activities. While the adults spend their days working in various “fields” and the children’s days are spent in the classrooms, actually getting a family together for an evening meal can prove to be very difficult. Dad has a late-night meeting. Mom has PTA. Little Bobby has football practice and Sweet Suzy has dance lessons. With such busy lives, family dinners are usually reserved for holidays and special occasions and are rarely considered the norm. This is a shame because the family who eats together, grows together.

Perhaps just the right Amish dining room furniture can help to encourage families to come together at mealtime more often. To be successful at organic vegetable gardening you must draw up detailed plans. The soil is your first consideration; how to make it rich and fertile, and how to prepare it so harmful pests won’t attack your vegetable garden. The two ways that organic vegetable gardening differs from conventional gardens is the usage of fertilizer and how to keep pests under control. Phosphorous, nitrogen and potassium are the three components essential to your organic garden.

For lush, green foliage you must have nitrogen. For strong roots and stems phosphorus is needed. And for the important protection from disease and brief cold snaps, potassium is a must. Let’s call them the big three. The big three are available in commercial fertilizers however they are synthetic. In organic vegetable gardening the big three are added in a much different way.

The best way of enriching your soil is by compost. Dig some pits in your back yard to start your compost from kitchen refuse. Use things like pine needles, corn stalks, leaves, carrot tops, fruits or vegetables that have spoiled, manure, egg shells and coffee grinds. Some organic gardeners use weeds in their compost but I do not recommend this for obvious reasons. As the compost materials decompose they release bacteria and fungi into the soil that you are preparing. The bacteria and fungi convert nutrients like nitrogen to ammonia and nitrates that will be usable for your vegetables. Use substances such as seaweed, potash salts, tobacco stems and wood ash to help make potassium in your compost. By making your own compost, you are controlling the mixture and balance to achieve the right combination for your organic vegetable garden.

To be absolutely sure that your compost has completely broken down and is now offering up the right balance, start working it into the soil at least two weeks before you plan on planting.

The pH in the soil must be right for healthy plants. Test your soil, if it has a ph of 0 it is very acidic, while a 14 is extreme alkaline. Of course a seven indicates neutral soil. To raise the pH of the soil inexpensively use ground limestone. An additional benefit of the limestone is that it contains magnesium something that most soils lack. If, on the other hand, you have extreme alkaline soil use sulpher to bring the pH down.

Pest control in organic vegetable gardening is also different that conventional gardening. In many conventional beds gardeners wish to eradicate all pests with pesticides. Many in organic gardening only wish to keep the pest population down so to have a balance in the garden. Obviously, whenever possible, plant pest resistant vegetables. In order for harmful organisms to grow, they need bright sunlight so keep thick mulch around the plants to deny the organisms that needed sunlight and to help hold moisture into the ground. If you find you have a heavy infestation here is a natural pest control formula:

In a jar, combine 1 teaspoon dishwashing liquid and 1 cup vegetable oil. Shake vigorously. In an empty spray bottle, combine 2 teaspoons of this mixture and 1 cup water. Use at ten-day intervals (or more often if needed) to rid plants of whiteflies, mites, aphids, scales, and other pests.

You might find it difficult to believe, but building an arbor for your garden landscape can actually be quite inexpensive. If you keep the arbor relatively small, to a two-post size, you can have a very attractive landscape feature for a small cost. Even the novice landscaper can build a small arbor without too much trouble in about two days (probably three at the most). It can be a very rewarding project that provides a sophisticated sense of beauty to your overall landscape design.

When it comes to building your arbor it is sensible to think about it as five distinct phases. This will not only help you to break the project down into realistic goals but will also help you to accomplish the task more easily. Breaking any large projects down into sections always helps the landscaper, as he or she will find that the task does not seem quite so daunting when done in bite-sized pieces. Additionally, a sense of accomplishment at the end of each stage can help the landscaper stay motivated throughout the project.

The first stage in building your arbor is to prepare the site for concrete placed under the ground to secure the structure. In order to lay the concrete, you need to first get some things out of the way. Dig two holes where you want the posts to stand. The holes should be one inch wide and three inches deep. Put half an inch of gravel or crushed stone inside the holes. This will help water drain away, preventing cracks later on in the concrete. Set one post in each hole and lay a board on top of them. Use a carpenter’s level to determine whether or not your posts are standing at equal heights. Adjust, if necessary, until the level shows that your posts are equal in height. If it will help you then you can use scrap lumber, nailed to the posts, to form temporary stabilizers.

The second stage is anchoring your arbor posts (they should be 4×4 posts) into the concrete. Before doing this, check again for equality in height with the stabilizers in place and make your adjustments to the stabilizers to adjust the height. Next, mix your concrete using concrete mix and water from a garden hose in a wheelbarrow; use a shovel to stir the concrete to ensure that you mix it well. Pour the concrete to fill each of the holes and then allow at least a day for the concrete to dry. You can remove the stabilizers once the concrete has hardened.

Stage three of building your arbor consists of laying two 1×6 pieces of wood along the sides at the top of the posts. These crosspieces should be perpendicular to the posts, and they will be opposite each other, one on the inner side and one on the outside. This creates a sandwiching effect for the tops of the arbor posts, as they are surrounded by the 1×6 pieces of wood. If you would prefer, you can cut designs into the ends of your crosspieces with a jigsaw for some added flair.

The next stage in the process, the fourth, consists of using 4×4 rafters to lie on top of your 1×6 crosspieces. These will be perpendicular to the crosspieces, and parallel to the line of the posts. There are five of them, only four inches long, so you will need to cut your 2×4s into pieces of the proper length. They should also be notched so that they fit tightly across the crosspieces. Notching can help you adjust for level differences in the rafters as well.

The final stage is the actual assembly of the arbor. Making sure that everything is properly aligned can help you as you bore the holes necessary for the arbor construction. You will need bolts that will go through the posts and the crosspieces on either side, making sure that the one bolt holds all three pieces of wood together. Additionally, you will need to secure the rafters in place and add any finishing touches you would like to add.

Obviously different plans for simple arbors exist, with variations on different themes and looks (using similar principles it is possible to build an arbor that has four posts). Looking on the Internet for plans and instructions is very simple, and can help you find an arbor that would complement your landscape design. Once you have found that, acquiring the lumber is simply a matter of searching for a good deal in lumberyards or warehouses. It is possible to get your wood for a reasonable price, and most of the other tools needed are commonplace and usually found around the house or are easily rented. Once you have your arbor, you can use it as a backdrop for intimate weddings and for entertaining. An arbor can quickly become one of the focal points of a very classy landscape.
